Private ownership of land is not a function of ancient history. It is in fact a fairly recent occurrence among the common people. It has mostly been a function of State or a few choosen in the organization of the State. History is filled with the fall of empires (Rome included) when the interest of the Rich and powerful took precedence over the function of governing the State.
Land ownership by the individual was created as a function of Capitalism which is a recent creation of society. It exist only because the State deems it as an incentive to reap the rewards of competition.
Unfortunately the American experiment is coming to an end. Instead of moving to widespread prosperity we are moving to the Age of Oligarchs.
If we do not move back to the time of cooperation of the Community and sharing of the common Good and away from the greed of excessive competition we will destroy the stable Community. We will create Despotic Rule or Anarchy. In a world of explosive population, chaos will reign and the ecology will be tipped into destructive forces and life will end as we know it.
I do not advocate the end of Capitalism and extraordinary reward for extraordinary performance. I do advocate the recognition of One Earth shared by all living things and the shared responsibility of preserving the ability of the earth to sustain life. If we do not we will abdicate our supremacy to some other life form or end life itself.
Banks create magic money and attach it to real property.
A Foreclosure can turn make believe into wealth on the backs of workers.
If the loan is repaid the Bank ends up with a bigger pile of "Make Belief"
and they can buy their own property.
